Washington D.C. really only has one football team. A cursory look over the "Soccer clubs in Washington, D.C." Wikipedia page results in either defunct women's or university level teams. That means if you're native to the city and you like football then you're more than likely going to support D.C. United.
In stark contrast to the previous location, D.C. United were one of the founding members of MLS back in 1996. It didn't take them long to win their first silverware picking up the MLS Cup in the very first season. They then went one better the next season not only grabbing the MLS Cup again but also collecting the Supporter's Shield in a historic double. The following season was still a relatively successful one, wining the Eastern Conference regular season. However after this it would be quite some time before the team experienced anymore silverware and success.
Without wanting to skip over some of the club's achievements that they have experienced in recent years, I feel it is only right as an English based football shirt collector to mention the signing of Wayne Rooney in 2018. I think it would be fair to say that Wayne Rooney is no David Beckham, in many aspects but it cannot be denied his quality on the pitch. Of course it was the tail end of his career but big name signings like this can only help club's such as D.C. United stand out in the market place as one of the premium football teams in the league.
